Lake Wawasee is the first largest natural lake located entirely within the state of Indiana. Lake Wawasee is 77 feet (22 meters) deep at its deepest spot and an average of 22 feet (6.7 meters). It covers 3060 acres (12 km²). Wawasee is a summer lake destination for many vacationers from Indiana and Illinois primarily. Historically speaking, it is named after the Miami chief Wawasee. There is a village founded by the Methodist church called "Oakwood" on one shore and across the lake is a large building called the "Spink's Hotel" which is now a condominium owned by Eli Lilly Corporation. Eli Lilly vacationed on Wawasee and owned a large portion of land on the lake and it is still a popular landmark today. Lake Wawasee is located near the intersection of State Road 13 and US 6, and boasts the town of Syracuse on its shores.
